AkaMya Culture Group is proud to announce the 100 Year Anniversary of the Alice Piper Vs. Big Pine School case which made it legal for Native American children to attend public schools. This landmark achievement took place June 2, 1924. This case was also used as a precedent in the more well-known Brown vs. Board of Education during the Civil Rights movement. It was a 15-year-old Paiute girl along with 6 other students that fought for this victory right here in Big Pine, CA.
It is our hope to collaborate with other community members and organizations to celebrate this great achievement for Native people.
We are now planning the 2024 100 Year Celebration and will be posting updates here.
